Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is one of the key sources of energy that is used almost everywhere for cooking and heating. As the world is moving towards cleaner fuels the production and supply of LPG shows how powerful is a nation’s energy sector.
As per the World Liquid Gas Organisation, “Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a portable, clean and efficient energy source which is readily available to consumers around the world. LPG is primarily obtained from natural gas and oil production but is also produced increasingly from renewable sources; its unique properties make it a versatile energy source which can be used in more than 1,000 different applications.”
As the tensions between the countries have been rising, the energy production all around the world has been impacted. The LPG production and consumption has suffered a huge impact and that is why understanding about the largest producer of the LPG can help you learn the how it is supplied around the world.
Which Country Is the Largest Producer of LPG in the World?
As per the official reports, the United States is the largest producer of LPG in the world. The nation has been the largest producer of this energy for over a decade.
The country uses advanced extraction techniques in various regions such as Permian Basin and Marcellus Shale. the United States produces roughly 84 million tonnes of LPG annually every year.
As per the American Petroleum Institute, “The U.S. accounted for 49% of global natural gas liquids (NGLs) production in 2024 and produced more than four times the amount of the second largest producer, Saudi Arabia. Production in the U.S. has more than doubled since 2015, with the rapid expansion of ethane and propane.”
The United States exports propane averages 1.8 million barrels per day as per U.S. Energy Information Administration. Today, the U.S. is not only the top producer but it is also the world’s leading exporter.
Top LPG-Producing Countries in the World
While the USA holds the top spot, there are many other countries around the world that contribute majorly to the global enery market. Here is the list of the top producers of LPG as per the latest 2025–2026 reports from the EIA and IEA:
| Rank | Country | Annual Production (Approx.) | Global Market Share |
| 1 | United States | 84 Million Tonnes | 26% |
| 2 | China | 32 Million Tonnes | 10% |
| 3 | Saudi Arabia | 26 Million Tonnes | 8% |
| 4 | Russia | 17 Million Tonnes | 5% |
| 5 | Canada | 12 Million Tonnes | 4% |

LPG Production in India
In India, LPG is primarily produced as a byproduct of oil refining. Major companies like Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Reliance Industries operate massive refineries that contribute to domestic supply. As per the PPAC website, the country produces around 28909 cubic meters of LPG which is thenet production.

Interesting Facts About LPG
- LPG is Naturally Odourless: Pure LPG has no scent. Manufacturers add a chemical called mercaptan to give it a distinct smell, allowing people to detect leaks easily.
- LPG is Heavier Than Air: LPG settles on the ground or in low-lying areas it is denser than the air that surrounds it.
- A Clean Burning Fuel: LPG releases very little smoke and has a lower carbon footprint compared to coal or wood.
- Expansion and Storage: When LPG turns from a liquid back into a gas, it expands to 270 times its original volume, which is why even a small cylinder can provide fuel for many weeks.
