The National Human Genome Research Institute mentions: “A virus is an infectious microbe consisting of a segment of nucleic acid (either DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protein coat. A virus cannot replicate alone; instead, it must infect cells and use components of the host cell to make copies of itself.”

To simply put, a virus is made up of a genetic material either DNA or RNA and it is surrounded by a protein coat that is called capsid. A virus has no cell of its own and that is why it needs to enter and attach to a living cell, human, animal or plant. After attaching to a cell, the virus starts to multiply.
