Every year, crores of cricket fans across India wait for one thing after the IPL league stage ends. The playoffs. This is the stage where only the best four teams in IPL fight for the trophy. If you have always wondered what exactly happens in the IPL playoffs, how it works, and why it is different from simple semifinals, this article is for you.

What is the IPL Playoffs?

The IPL Playoffs is the final stage of the Indian Premier League. After all 10 teams play their league matches, the top 4 teams on the points table move to the playoffs. The remaining 6 teams go home.

The playoffs consist of four knockout matches: Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the IPL Final. These four matches decide who becomes the IPL champion.

As of now, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans will be facing each other in Qualifier 1 on May 26, 2026 at HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala.

Similarly Sunrisers Hyderabad will be up against Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026 Eliminator match on 27, May 2026 at the New International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh.

When Did IPL Playoffs Start?

Many people think the IPL always had this format. But that is not true. Before 2011, the IPL used a straightforward semi-final system where the top four teams entered sudden-death knockouts. Lose and go home.

The problem with that system was simple. A team could dominate the entire season and still lose the title because of one bad day. That felt unfair.

The IPL revamped its playoff structure ahead of the 2011 season. Since then, the top two teams on the points table get an extra life. This made the format much more exciting and fair.

How Does the IPL Playoffs Work?

Here is the full breakdown of IPL Playoffs:

Step 1: Qualifier 1 (Top 2 teams play)

Qualifier 1 is the first playoff match featuring the teams that finish 1st and 2nd on the league table. The winner of this match directly qualifies for the IPL Final. The losing team does not go home. They get another chance through Qualifier 2.

Step 2: Eliminator (3rd and 4th place teams play)

The teams that finish third and fourth face each other in the second match of the IPL playoffs, the Eliminator. While the winner of this contest moves ahead in the tournament, the losing team faces elimination and is knocked out of the race to the final. This is a do-or-die match. Lose here and your IPL season is over.

Step 3: Qualifier 2 (Second chance match)

The loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator then take on each other in Qualifier 2. Every fixture except Qualifier 1 is a knockout match and the losing team does not get a second chance. The winner of Qualifier 2 goes to the Final.

Step 4: The Final

The winner of Qualifier 1 and the winner of Qualifier 2 play the IPL Final. Whoever wins lifts the trophy.

Why Do Top 2 Teams Get an Advantage?

This is the smartest part of the IPL playoffs format. If you finish 1st or 2nd in the league stage, you get two chances to reach the final. If you lose Qualifier 1, you still have Qualifier 2.

But if you finish 3rd or 4th, you must win every single match from the Eliminator onwards. One loss and you are out.

This rewards teams that perform well throughout the season. It is not just about one lucky day.

How Many Points Does a Team Need to Qualify?

There is no fixed number, but historically 16 to 18 points (7 to 9 wins) is usually enough to secure a playoff spot. In competitive seasons, 14 points might work with a strong NRR.

If two teams have the same points, Net Run Rate (NRR) is used to decide who finishes higher on the table.

Which Teams Have Reached the Playoffs the Most?

Chennai Super Kings have reached the playoffs 12 times in 18 seasons and have played a record 26 playoff matches, winning 17 and losing nine. Mumbai Indians follow with 20 playoff matches, winning 13 and losing seven.

CSK and MI are clearly the two most consistent teams when it comes to making it to the playoffs every year.

The IPL Playoffs is what makes the IPL so thrilling. Every match at this stage is high pressure. One mistake and your team goes home. The format is simple once you understand it and it gives every top-four team a fair shot at the title.
